What is the difference between facilitating and managing?

Why should arts leaders be facilitators and not managers?

It's time we changed the way we think about arts administration...are we managers or facilitators!

Managing is controlling, hands on and action oriented. Facilitating is not controlling and is very interpersonal. Managers take care of an organization and make day to day decisions. While a facilitator can also be a manager, their focus is on making processes easier and assisting in the personal development of their staff.

Our jobs as arts leaders is to make the job of the artist easier - we are there to facilitate the artist! To manage, fund and prepare the venue so that when the artist arrives they can focus on performing or exhibiting their art!

Artists need a home, a place they can perform/exhibit and feel safe. Where they can practice and grow in their art form. It is our mission as arts leaders to create and maintain these homes.
